Pre-care instructions for Lips

In order for your new brows to heal properly (and look their best) these Pre & Post Care Instructions found below are of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE! Pre-Care instructions are designed to limit bleeding and skin sensitivities during the service. Excessing bleeding during the procedure will dilute the pigment color and lead to poor results!

Attention Please: We strongly advise prospective new clients to book their appointments at least 3-4 months in advance of Vacations, Weddings, and Special Occasions. This allows adequate time for healing and time to receive touch ups. Some New Clients may require multiple sessions ( at an additional cost) to achieve their desired density and shape. To achieve the best results, it is essential that you understand and follow the pre-care instructions. This process can take up to 4 weeks.

As a necessary precaution, if you have ever had a cold sore in your life, you will be required to take an anti-viral prescribed by your doctor (i.e. Valtrex). Cold sore outbreaks are often triggered by stress or trauma to the lips and skin and can effect the healing and results. Therefore if you are a carrier, lip blush will likely cause an outbreak if you do not take an anti-viral medication prior. The medication should be taken for a total of 7 days (3 days prior to procedure, 1 day-of, and 3 days post-procedure). There are absolutely NO exceptions to this rule! This rule holds true for every time you have any lip tattoo.

Examples of antiviral medications: Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex. You will need to contact your physician in order to obtain your prescription strength anti-viral medication. You must inform them of your decision to have permanent cosmetic tattoo applied to your lips and they will need to call your prescription in for you to pick up at your pharmacy.

6 Weeks Prior

Botox & Fillers must be done at least 6 weeks prior to your procedure.

Discontinue the use of any Anti-aging products such as: Glycolics, Retin-A, Retinol, Vitamin A, Chemical and Laser Peels, Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), any chemical exfoliant or "brightening" skincare 6 weeks prior to your appointment. The use of any of these products less than 6 weeks prior to your service may cause poor retention and results!

4 Weeks Prior

No Anti-aging and/or Anti-acne products

No Surgery of any kind.

We will not be able to tattoo over any blemishes, sores, and moles in or around the lip area

1-2 Weeks Prior

Create an easy at-home sugar scrub by mixing any oil you have on hand (like coconut or olive oil) with sugar. Gently exfoliate around your lips once a day for 2 weeks before your appointment to ensure smooth, hydrated lips for best results.

Avoid sun and tanning bed 1-2 weeks prior to appointment.

No facial or chemical peels 2 weeks prior to appointment.

Avoid Fish Oil, Prenatal Vitamins, Nutritional Shakes (Shakeology, etc), "Hair, Skin, Nail" supplements 2 weeks prior to procedure.

Drink plenty of fluids the week prior to your procedure..

48-72 Hours Prior

If you have experienced cold sores before, be sure to begin your antiviral medication 3 days prior to the procedure.

Do not work out 48 hours prior to your procedure. Increased circulation may cause bleeding during your procedure, diluting the pigment, and leaving you with poor healed results.

No blood thinners such as Ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve, NSAIDS, vitamin E, fish oil or vitamins unless medically necessary 48-72 hours prior to your appointment.

Avoid smoking any substances for 48 hours prior to your appointment.

24 Hours Prior

NO ALCOHOL and NO CAFFEINE (Yes, there is still caffeine in Decaf coffee and tea!) 24 hours prior to your appointment. This will prevent any excess bleeding, oozing and minimizes swelling during the procedure.

Day of Appointment:

Please wash your hair the morning/day of your appointment, this will simplify the after care for you.

Please Note: You will be more sensitive during your menstrual cycle.

Aftercare instructions for Lips

After care treatment makes up 50% of the total treatment success. Please meticulously adhere to the given advice because if not, you can risk losing up to 80% of the pigment in your new lips.

*Immediately following the procedure, lips may feel dry, chapped, tight and tender to the touch.

- If needed, complete your antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak.

- Apply ointment on lips several times a day. This should be done for at least 14 days post treatment.  Do not allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. During the day if lips feel dry, apply a light layer of ointment. Make sure to dab/press onto skin, do not rub it in.

- Itching is normal, DO NOT PICK!

- No soaps, cleansing creams, or chemicals on lips. Wash your face carefully avoiding the lip area for 10 days.

- Avoid moisture to the lips such as hot soups and hot coffee for 10 days. Drink everything through a straw until lips completely peel.

- DO NOT stretch the lips. Avoid biting into large sandwiches, etc.  Cut food into tiny bites.

- Do not bite into greasy, oily, salty or spicy foods, rather cut them up and place them into your mouth.

- While eating, do not constantly wipe your lips with a napkin or keep licking your lips as this will impede the healing process. DO NOT PICK dry healing tissue or you WILL remove the pigment color!

- Avoid water on the new pigmented areas as much as possible, the first 7 days. (when showering, washing face, etc. have ointment on the pigmented area to protect lips from water). Do not stand in front of the shower head when showering.

- Avoid underwater swimming and bathing for a minimum of 4 weeks to avoid bacterial infection.

- Before brushing your teeth, seal lips with ointment first. While brushing teeth be careful to not stretch your lips. Work your way around the lips without pressing against them with your toothbrush.

- You may apply an ice pack (which must be protected with a wet barrier film of paper toweling, towel or cloth) for 10-minute intervals for the first 48 hours. Ice may be applied every hour or so, if desired. Do not put ice directly on the area.

- Do not expose the lips to direct sunlight or tanning beds for 4 weeks. This is new skin and will sunburn easily and direct sun prematurely may also cause scarring and alter pigment color.

- You may wear lipstick, lipgloss, and chapstick after 10 days, make sure the tube of lip product is new.

- Sleeping slightly elevated will help prevent swelling. It’s recommended to sleep on your back on a satin pillowcase. If the pillowcase is not satin, you may also wrap your pillowcase at night and replace with a fresh wrap in the morning. This keeps pigment from sticking to the pillowcase at night.

- No smoking while lips are healing (10 days minimum).

- No kissing, rubbing or friction on your newly tattooed lips until after 10 days or you may lose pigment.

- Lips may be dry for 3 to 6 months depending on the body reaction. Keep them moist!

Expect moderate swelling, usually one to three days following the procedure. Scabbing may make the lips feel thick. Lips will fade up to 50% after the first 5 days. While healing, the tattoo will look patchy. This is due to skin regeneration and healing.  Some New clients may require multiple sessions ( at an additional cost) to achieve their desired density and shape.

The above Pre and Post-Care for lips will affect how quickly or slowly you heal. Mature age, poor diet, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, age, general health, sleep/fatigue. The more fatigued you are the lower your immune system is and infection is more likely to occur. Please get plenty of rest and drink lots of water to hydrate prior to the procedure.

.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE HEALING PROCESS (estimated timeline below)

Day 1: Swelling, tenderness, and high color intensity. Don’t panic – this is normal and it will subside.

Day 2: Less swelling, more tenderness, and a lot of dryness. Don’t touch your lips! Apply the ointment.

Day 3-7: Lips will begin and end the process of peeling, and color will lighten by 30%-50%. Do not pick or rub your lips and let the peeling happen naturally. Continue Keep lips moist!

Week 2: Lips are done peeling, color is light. You may return to normal routines. Lips will continue to heal, up to 6 weeks. Every week more color will surface/darken. Keep lips moist!

Week 6-8: Your lips are healed and you're feeling unstoppable!!! Just add some lip gloss and go! In most cases it requires two treatments to complete the lip transformation.

After the healing process is complete take care of your lips by applying sunscreen or moisturizer with an SPF every day to help protect your lips from the UV rays (environment). This helps slow down the fading time.

Protect your investment after your lips have Fully Healed

- Exposure to the sun and tanning beds will cause premature fading and discoloration of the pigment.

- Apply a physical sunscreen daily on lip area once completely healed (4 weeks) to prevent premature fading, this will help protect your brows from the UV rays and will slow down the fading time. We love this sunscreen Skinceuticals Physical Fusion. You can also apply a moisturizer with an SPF in it we also love Image Skincare Tinted Moisturizer.

- For further sun protection wear hats, sunglasses, and stay in the shade!

- Lasers will alter the color of the pigment. 20% zinc oxide must covering your lips prior to any facial laser services.

- Yearly touchups are recommended to maintain your results.

- Certain skincare products and services will cause premature fading of your lip blushing and may also alter the pigment color. Please apply a barrier layer of Vaseline over your tattoo before use of any of the following: Glycolic acid, Salicylic acid, Alpha Hydroxy acid, Hydroquinone, Retinol/Retin-a, vitamin c, peels, microdermabrasion, Obagi ,or anything anything that brightens or treats hyperpigmentation.

- Frequent chlorine swimmers, please apply a barrier layer of Vaseline over your tattoo prior to swimming, to prevent premature fading.

-The above Pre and Post-Care for lips will affect how quickly or slowly you heal. Your lifestyle and daily habits play a significant role in how well your brows heal and how long they retain their color. Factors such as age, diet, stress levels, smoking, alcohol consumption, overall health, and quality of sleep can all impact the longevity and vibrancy of your brows. Taking care of your health and following recommended pre- and post-care can help keep your brows looking their best for longer.
